Synchronized Project Management with Advanced Time Reports

The following is a scenario-based description of how ATR Client/ATR Server/ATR Web combination can be used as a fully connected and synchronized system.

The BIG Picture:

Advanced Time Reports is a powerful project tracking and management software that allows client-server interaction in a synchronized manner. The system can be setup for both the local and the web functionality. To get a better idea we will develop a simple use case scenario.

Scenario:

Company XYZ has five user locations and one server location. Bob is the manager who requires his employees to report their time spent on projects and tasks through Advanced Time Reports (ATR) on a daily basis. In addition, Bob wants to keep an eye on the progress of particular projects to make sure an adequate amount of time is assigned as well as spent by his employees. Being part of a rapidly growing industry, Bob needs to travel and requires to be able to stay in touch with his project management duties from the outside of his company. Having said that, use of a web service is imminent. Bob assigns his IT technician John to implement a software solution scheme to meet the criteria above.

Solution:

The common node for the user-server interaction is the company’s server. John must install both the ATR Server and the ATR  Client on the server machine. In order to achieve web-based functionality, John also installs ATR Web and ensures external accessibility by properly configuring the IIS and the server security settings. Employees from each of the five company locations will be reporting their time, which signifies exchange of information with the server. As such, John installs ATR Client in each location and establishes connection to the main server. To make sure no one abuses company rules, John sets up permissions and assigns specific licenses to the employees via ATR Client that he had previously installed on the server machine.

As a result, each of the location’s employees can report time and stay in sync with the server; manager Bob can manage projects and tasks both through the server’s ATR Client and through the the web interface. And lastly, IT technician John can provide server maintenance directly on the server without having to interrupt employees’ work.
